Concord, N.H. — Governor Sununu today cowardly refused to comment on the draconian 24-week abortion ban -- which includes no exceptions for rape or to protect the health of the mother -- that Senate Republicans forced into the state budget today, making this the latest reminder that Governor Sununu opposes reproductive freedom. In a 2016 interview, Sununu told the Union Leader that he would support a new abortion ban like the one Senate Republicans are proposing. “Sununu’s cowardly refusal to comment on his New Hampshire Republican Party’s latest attacks on women’s health care won’t fool anyone. His record makes it clear that he will support Republicans’ efforts to ban safe and legal abortions,” said NHDP Spokesperson Gates MacPherson. In 2016, Sununu made clear that he would support an abortion ban at just 20 weeks, even stricter than the ban now proposed by Senate Republicans: “[Sununu] said he opposes late-term abortions, but would not be specific. ‘We can generally say third trimester, but some say 20 weeks. I think we can look at those options, but I am not going to put a timeline on it now,’ he said.” [Union Leader, 10/20/16] Today, the NH Bulletin reported that Sununu declined to comment on the new abortion ban, which would ban abortions after 24 weeks, and does not include exceptions for victims of rape or incest, or consideration for the health of the mother—making it one of the most aggressive attacks on women’s reproductive health in the country.
