NHDP Statement: Sununu supports Trumpcare & offers characteristically few details

Concord, N.H. – Yesterday, Governor Sununu applauded House Republicans passage of Trumpcare. In February, he defended the prospective Trumpcare plan after meeting with the Trump administration. After the first version of Trumpcare in March, Sununu offered delayed, vague concerns and was pressured to say it was “definitely not a bill [he was] signing onto.” In reaction to yesterday’s passage of Trumpcare legislation in the House, Sununu embraced a version of the bill that had been amended to appease the radical Republican House Freedom Caucus. Sununu has yet to voice his remaining concerns about the bill or tell us what exactly changed from the first bill to the second that earned his support.

Trumpcare legislation, which passed the House by a slim margin on a party-line vote, had no Congressional Budget Office score, no hearing to debate its merits, and many Republican legislators admitted voting for the bill without reading it.

NHDP Chair Ray Buckley issued the following statement:

“For two months now, Governor Sununu has gotten away with giving very few specific opinions on the Trumpcare legislation he just bear-hugged. Sununu said in March that he wouldn’t sign onto the first version of the bill, but now that House Republicans have made it crueler and more radical to appease Freedom Caucus members, the governor is applauding the legislation. Sununu has serious questions to answer about the bill he just supported that would kick tens of thousands in New Hampshire off of the coverage they desperately need.

What exactly changed from the first version to this version to make Sununu support Trumpcare? What specifically were his concerns before and what are his concerns now? Does Sununu still want to block grant Medicaid or does he support the Medicaid Expansion provision of the Affordable Care Act, which Trumpcare slashes dramatically?”
